Wow. Tekken Card Tournament. What?
Namco Bandai released this press release today announcing their video gaming concept, Tekken Card Tournament that hopes to fuse physical real world cards with digital combat, and I’ll be very honest with you, I’m pretty excited about this, because I really really want to try playing card games. I bought a Magic Gathering starter deck a few months ago then returned them because I just felt so unfamiliar with the world the cards existed in so I didn’t try. It didn’t help that I don’t have many friends who regularly go and play that would play with me, so I just gave up.
The idea of card games always appealed to me and my desire to collect things in sets. So when Sony announced a standalone card game for it’s Uncharted Vita title I was ecstatic Finally a card game based on a universe I’m familiar with! Bonus, I can play it alone and still have heaps of fun! While I am yet to finish Uncharted: Golden Abyss, I look forward to doing so, and then getting my teeth into Fight or Fortune.
What’s interesting about this is that Namco Bandai want to take this new game way further than Sony did with Uncharted. They want to bring it to the physical space too! From their press release, “TEKKEN CARD TOURNAMENT™ will bring the popular TEKKEN franchise to the card battle genre in 2 different phases: A free-to-play online card battle game for tablets, smartphones and web browsers will be available in the next few weeks, while physical booster card packs will arrive in stores later in the year.”
I’ll be able to play the game as a standalone unit with the collectable nature of Pokémon Cards of my youth. It’s Skylanders for adults, it’s utterly brilliant and I really wish I had thought of it myself.
If these screenshots are anything to go by, the game looks like it is going to be challenging, interesting and a whole ton of fun. Especially as the game promises cross-play, which means I can play against anyone who has the game regardless of platform. That sounds pretty awesome to me and I can’t wait till this gets released!
